Customer Reviews For HP 1040 Monochrome Inkjet Fax Machine

Quality Fax at a reasonable price

Review Date: February 4, 2006
Reviewer: Lawrence W. Sisselman,
This machine does everything that I hoped it would do and it does it flawlessly. Copies and transmissions are crystal clear, there are no paper jams, and set-up is simple with great directions. I thought about one of the cheaper machines but after reading reviews and doing research, I decided on this HP 1040 plain paper, ink jet. The film types seem to be a lot of trouble-this ink jet is a dream! Highly recommended. If you need a simple fax machine for occasional faxing and copying, this is the one to buy.
SO FAR, WORKS AS IT SHOULD

Reviewer: P. M. Gross,
We bought this as a replacement for an old Panasonic "film" fax that had developed an intermittent short circuit. It is used for "light duty", more for sending than receiving.

Having read other comments for both this and the HP 1050 fax, we have it hooked into a single land line shared with an extension, no VOIP or digital phone, and without a surge protector.

The major decision in buying an inexpensive fax is whether to go "film" or ink cartridge.

Film can be wasteful and expensive. It indexes one page for each page received so that both a 3-line cover sheet and a page of solid text require a full sheet of film. On the other hand, film doesn't dry out in the device; while it takes up shelf space, it can be stored almost indefinitely; and there seem to be several quality "generic" film suppliers at half the cost of what Panasonic charges.

Ink cartridge drain in proportion to usage. While small, storage life is more limited and, in other devices, I've personally not had good experience with non HP "generic" or refilled cartridges.

The HP 1040 costs about $25. or so more than the bottom of the line Panasonic film unit. Note that it comes with a "starter" cartridge. Full cartridges sell for $30. at a local retailer.

So far, the fax is working as advertised. It took time to set up. There are lots of options and settings - the manual is some 87 pages. As with other electronic devices, I recommend downloading the manual from the HP web site and reading it before buying the product.

At least compared to my old Panasonic fax, the print is clearer and the operation is faster. It has good report functions and intuitive menus. But you do have to read the manual!

If any quality issues develop, I will post them here.

ADD: June, 2007. One major problem with this machine is faxing bank statements (slightly thicker than normal paper and previously folded for mailing -- although that may not be an issue.)

The statements do not feed smoothly and tend to hang up the machine. Accordingly, it is necessary to insert them sequentially and one page at a time during the faxing operation rather than stacking them in the feed slot.

Had we know this earlier, we would have given fewer than five stars but Amazon will not allow a rating change after posting.

I work for a company that has 10 retail stores, and all are equipped with fax machines. I'm slowly replacing various brand fax machines with the HP 1040. So far, all of the HP 1040 fax machines are working flawlessly.

I'm amazed at all the negative reviews for the HP 1040 fax machine on Amazon. Most people will not leave a positive review for a product that is working fine for reasons such as....

"I don't have the time"
"I have better things to do"
"It's such a pain to write reviews for products"

Writing negative reviews becomes a "priority" once the product fails.

Purchase HP1040 FAX/Copier to replace recalled HP1010. Very pleased as the 1040 uses the same cartridge, looks the same, and does the job I need it to do.
3 years and no problems.

I've owned the HP1040 for about 3 years after putting my fist through a previously owned Brother fax, and can honestly say that it has worked flawlessly. Regardless of what other reviewers have said about it, you can connect an answering machine to it. Read the manual! The print quality is excellent and it accepts multiple pages without a flaw.
